The name chrysoberyl is derived from the Greek words chrysos and beryllos, meaning 'a gold-white spar'. Chrysoberyl has excellent wearability as it is very hard (8.5 on the Moh's scale) and is tough. Chrysoberyl was discovered in later 1700's and named by Abraham Gottlob Werner. Werner worked at the Freiberg School of Mining and was well known as one of the most outstanding geologists of his time. Chrysoberyl is typically yellow, yellow-green, or brownish with its color being caused by the presence of iron. Despite the similarity of their names, chrysoberyl and beryl are two completely different gemstones. Chrysoberyl is not well known in its own right and the alexandrite variety is much more widely recognized. Cat's eye chrysoberyl (cymophane) has a fair amount of notoriety.
