Garnet is a wonderful world of a group of minerals. Names of members include Tsavorite, Hessonite, Rhodolite, Mali, Malaya, Spessartite and Paraiba. Garnet occurs in a wide range of colors and has very good durability for wear in all types of jewelry. Garnet traces its roots back to 3100 B.C., where Egyptian artisans would craft the gemstone into beads or inlay them into hand-wrought jewelry. Garnet has long been associated with fire and illumination for many ancient cultures. It is said to be a jewel with the capacity to illuminate the night sky. Gypsy Rose Garnet was discovered in 2005 in Umba Valley in Tanzania. What makes this attractive orange-red garnet different is its unusually high grossular content (7.0-8.5%). This grossular component may give Gypsy Rose its special hue which is lighter and brighter than most other red garnets.
